Sustainable is certainly “in” for 2012 kitchen design. As the design industry, like many other industries these days, sets greener goals, kitchen designers are discovering innovative ways to incorporate green materials and appliances into a cohesive and beautiful design.
In researching the future of the sustainable kitchen, we came across a few articles in Architectural Digest that were particularly fascinating. A collaboration between the AD editors and Bon Appétit, these articles explore the idea of “The Future-Perfect Kitchen.” The permeating theme that began to appear was that the sustainable kitchen is not simply defined by energy efficiency and waste minimization but by an aesthetic that seems to also take in the idea that less is more. Here’s what AD editors and Bon Appétit the key factors to a truly sustainable kitchen design.
- Energy efficient appliances
- Cabinetry produced out of eco-friendly materials that are free of urea-formaldehyde
- Lots of natural light through large windows/skylights
- Reflective surfaces to amplify natural light
- Homegrown vegetables or herbs in the kitchen or nearby outside
